yelp meets twitter

I just opened a Foursquare account, supposedly the "Twitter of 2010.” When I tried to add friends via my Facebook account, only 1 was registered with the site (that’s 1 out of 717). It'll be interesting to see how quickly this changes... if at all.

Foursquare is much like twitter, except instead of just tweeting whatever comes to mind, you use it to “check in” at various locations to let friends know where you are, around respective cities. It’s more to promote businesses and activities by letting friends know what’s fun and interesting to do:

"Foursquare ventures beyond utility, however: It's a virtual game in which participants earn badges for checking in at various locations; those that check in most become a venue's "mayor." By all accounts, this mechanism is as addictive as Twitter, Facebook or checking your e-mail on a BlackBerry." (read full article)

I really cannot see another social networking site overshadowing Facebook, since they are forever changing and updating their design to keep up with emerging platforms. The only possible business plan is not to compete, but complement. I think foursquare emulates this model, much like Twitter does.

So is it the new Twitter? I don’t care really. For now it’s another procrastination device during exam finals.

(...almost as bad as Scrabulous circa May 2008 Finals week)
